Was asked by a climate activist who also happens to be my dad to do a song about climate change for a community event he was helping to organise. I figured the best way to get the message across in a way that struck the right balance between serious and fun was to describe what climate change is. Here's the result. Oh, and there's a great video to accompany it which my sister Katie made, featuring work by a host of talented young artists. You can find it on youtube.

I wanted to find out what global warming means
And how it’s caused by humans, including you and me
Cos if we know what’s happening surely there’s something we can do about it

The sun is very hot, so hot you can’t go near
Its rays travel through space and pass through our atmosphere
The gases here on earth all act in different ways
Some help to cool the planet while some trap the sun’s rays
Like carbon dioxide – we call it CO2, and there are other greenhouse gases too
And humans help produce them in a lot of things we do
Like burning fossil fuels – that’s oil, gas and coal
Which we use to heat our houses, to drive our cars and to make a whole range of goods

And if we know what’s happening surely there’s something we can do about it
And if we know what’s happening surely there’s something we can do about it

A tree on its own might not seem much, but through photosynthesis
It absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere and helps us to exist
By cutting forests down, the trees can’t do their work
And we put more CO2 back in the atmosphere with every tree we burn
The planet’s warming up with all this CO2
It makes hot weather more likely, and storms and flooding too
And those who have the least will feel the worst effects
Which seems really unfair because, by far and away, those who have the least produce less CO2
